How to cook Lasagna

Cooking lasagna involves several steps: preparing the sauce, cooking the noodles, assembling the layers, and baking. Here's a detailed recipe:

Ingredients

For the Meat Sauce:

  • 1 pound ground beef or Italian sausage
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 (28-ounce) can crushed tomatoes
  • 1 (6-ounce) can tomato paste
  • 1 (15-ounce) can tomato sauce
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 2 tablespoons sugar (optional)
  • 2 teaspoons dried basil leaves
  • 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
  • 1 tablespoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley

For the Cheese Mixture:

  • 16 ounces ricotta cheese
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley

For the Lasagna:

  • 12 lasagna noodles
  • 1 pound mozzarella cheese, shredded
  • 3/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Meat Sauce

  1. In a large saucepan or Dutch oven, cook the ground beef or Italian sausage over medium heat until browned. Drain any excess fat.
  2. Add the chopped onion and cook until tender, about 5 minutes. Add the minced garlic and cook for an additional minute.
  3. Stir in the crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, tomato sauce, and water. Add sugar (if using), basil, Italian seasoning, salt, pepper, and parsley. Simmer on low heat for about 30 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Step 2: Prepare the Cheese Mixture

  1. In a mixing bowl, combine the ricotta cheese, egg, salt, and parsley. Mix well.

Step 3: Cook the Noodles

  1. Cook the lasagna noodles according to the package instructions. Drain and rinse with cold water to prevent sticking.

Step 4: Assemble the Lasagna

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Spread 1 cup of meat sauce in the bottom of a 9x13-inch baking dish.
  3. Place 4 lasagna noodles over the sauce.
  4. Spread one-third of the ricotta cheese mixture over the noodles.
  5. Top with one-third of the mozzarella cheese and 1/4 cup of Parmesan cheese.
  6. Repeat the layers twice more (sauce, noodles, ricotta, mozzarella, Parmesan).
  7. Finish with a final layer of sauce and the remaining mozzarella and Parmesan cheese.

Step 5: Bake the Lasagna

  1. Cover with aluminum foil (to prevent sticking, you can spray the foil with cooking spray or make sure it does not touch the cheese).
  2. Bake in the preheated oven for 25 minutes.
  3. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 25 minutes, or until the lasagna is bubbling and the cheese is melted and slightly browned.
  4. Let it cool for about 15 minutes before serving to allow the layers to set.

Tips

  • For a vegetarian version, you can substitute the meat with a variety of vegetables like zucchini, spinach, and mushrooms.
  • Lasagna can be made ahead of time and refrigerated or frozen before baking.
  • Use no-boil noodles to save time on preparation.

Enjoy your homemade lasagna!
